Lake Merritt

Explore the Charm and Beauty of Lake Merritt

Lake Merritt is a natural oasis that sits just alongside busy city streets. Its grassy shore is dotted with locals at all times of the day, who bring along guitars, pets, and takeout food from the neighboring spots along Grand Avenue. In addition to the lakeside strip, you can also peruse the Gardens at Lake Merritt. Free to enter and perfect for social media vacation posts, the gardens feature technicolor floral displays, towering cacti, and big-bloom succulents.

Redwood Regional Park

Hike Among Towering Trees in Redwood Regional Park

City-meets-nature experiences don’t stop at Lake Merritt. Hop in an Uber and head up to Redwood Regional Park where you can marvel at some of the tallest trees in the country without having to head further north to the national park. Well-traveled and lovingly cared for, this park caters to all types of visitors, marking trails by distance and difficulty levels and providing restrooms and picnic areas to allow for relaxing breaks along the way.

Amazing Views

Take In the City from the Top of Mountain View Cemetery

While a walk through a cemetery sounds like a scene from a horror film, it isn’t taboo when it comes to Oakland’s Mountain View Cemetery. Tucked back at the end of the Piedmont neighborhood’s bustling main drag, this cemetery is a go-to for locals and visitors out to enjoy a sunny afternoon. Famous for its history, scenery, and notable figures it serves as a resting place, Mountain View Cemetery is open to the public to take in its lush gardens and panoramic view of the city. After your stroll, hit up the kitschy tiki bar across from its entrance for punchy cocktails and a game of pool.

The Movies

Catch a Show at One of Two Historic Theaters

Oakland offers multiple options for guests to soak up the arts in uniquely vintage scenery. The Paramount Theatre and Grand Lake Theater are perfectly preserved theaters that host artists and films from around the world year-round. Voted one of the nation’s top 10 vintage theaters, Grand Lake Theater boasts stunningly ornate viewing rooms, each in their own distinct style. Hailed as “one of the finest remaining examples of Art Deco design” in the United States, The Paramount pairs its roster of performances with monthly theater tours.

Museum

Celebrate the Past at the Oakland Museum of California

California is colorfully on display at this expansive museum just steps away from Lake Merritt. See an artist’s playful rendition of the prehistoric West Coast, visit the gallery of natural sciences to marvel at California’s many ecosystems, and discover California’s history from Native stories to Hollywood portraits.
